About
Getting to Know Your Therapist
A bit about who I am, how I work, and what you can expect.
Introduction
I'm John Doe, a registered psychotherapist based in Toronto. I work with adults, couples, and families who are navigating some of life's harder stretches — anxiety that won't quiet down, relationships that feel stuck, grief that hasn't found a place to land, or the disorientation that comes with a major life change.
I don't believe therapy has to follow a rigid script. Some sessions are structured and goal-oriented. Others are slower, more exploratory. What stays consistent is my commitment to showing up honestly, paying close attention, and working at a pace that actually serves you.
My practice is explicitly affirming of LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. I bring an anti-oppressive lens to my work, which means I pay attention to how systems of power — not just personal history — shape the struggles people bring into the room.
Approach
How I Work
I draw from several evidence-based modalities and tailor my approach to what each client actually needs.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT helps identify thought patterns and behaviours that keep you stuck. It's practical, structured, and particularly useful for anxiety, depression, and managing overwhelming emotions.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an evidence-based approach to processing trauma. It works with the body's natural healing capacity to reduce the emotional charge of difficult memories.
Psychodynamic Therapy
This approach looks at how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape present behaviour. It's slower, deeper work — useful when the same issues keep showing up in different areas of your life.
Values
What Guides My Practice
Affirming & Inclusive
This practice is a welcoming space for people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, relationship structures, and cultural backgrounds. That's not a disclaimer — it's central to how I work.
Anti-Oppressive
I recognize that personal struggles don't exist in a vacuum. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of systemic oppression have real effects on mental health — and I take that seriously in the therapy room.
Client-Centred
You know your life better than I do. My job is to bring clinical skill, honest feedback, and genuine curiosity — not to tell you what to do. We collaborate on what therapy looks like for you.
Grounded & Direct
I'm warm, but I'll also be honest with you. Therapy works best when your therapist is willing to gently name what they notice, even when it's uncomfortable.
